The story
Colonel William Nelson Chancellor, twice mayor of Parkersburg and president of the First National Bank, built the hotel during the oil and gas boom; it opened on May 6, 1889 with gas and electric lighting and an electric passenger elevator, and the bank operated inside it into the 1910s. By the late 1970s it had become apartments, and a May 9, 1979 fire was stopped below the fourth floor. Local citizens and Pennsylvania investors revived it from 1980, with renovations in 1985-86 and 2002-06 that reduced about 104 rooms to 82.
