The story
Built facing Pershing Square to designs by New York architects Schultze & Weaver, the 14-story Biltmore opened in 1923 and became Los Angeles’ social center. It hosted eight Academy Awards ceremonies during Hollywood’s Golden Age, and HHA repeats the oral tradition that art director Cedric Gibbons sketched the Oscar statuette here. The city made it Historic-Cultural Monument No. 60 in 1969, and it has appeared in films from Chinatown to Oppenheimer.
