The story
The Armstrong was built in 1923 in response to the tourism boom spurred by the automobile. It opened with 40 guest rooms and two large dining rooms seating 182, and the local AAA chapter kept an office in the building. At three stories it was one of the tallest buildings downtown and the last hotel built in downtown Fort Collins. College Avenue was the main Denver-to-Wyoming route until the interstate was completed in the 1950s, after which motels went up east of town near I-25.
