The story
Walter J. Kohler, president of the Kohler Company, built the American Club as a dormitory and social club for the company’s single immigrant workers, dedicating it on June 23, 1918, as part of the planned village of Kohler that he developed with Philipp and the Olmsted Brothers. Milwaukee architect Richard Philipp designed it in a Tudor Revival style inspired by English garden communities. Kohler said a worker deserves “not only wages but roses as well.” Listed on the National Register in 1978, it is now Kohler’s flagship resort hotel and a Historic Hotels of America member.
