The story
The building opened about 1917 as the Hotel Irving, a four-story brick hotel with a chamfered corner entrance, and it operated into the 1980s. Viking Range Corp., founded in Greenwood by Fred Carl, transformed the building in 2003 and opened The Alluvian. The name plays on the Delta’s alluvial plain, and the inn says Tennessee Williams called its people Alluvians. It now anchors a Greenwood group that includes a spa, the Viking Cooking School and Giardina’s restaurant.
