The story
Littleton merchant Henry L. ‘Dad’ Thayer bought the lot in 1843 and opened Thayer’s White Mountain Hotel on January 14, 1850, ahead of the railroad’s 1852 arrival. Its monumental temple front with three-story fluted Doric columns makes it a precursor of the region’s later grand hotels. The inn lists Presidents Ulysses S. Grant, Franklin Pierce, Richard Nixon, Jimmy Carter and George H.W. Bush among its visitors. The attic ballroom became bedrooms in the early 20th century, and ‘Hotel’ became ‘Inn’ in 1984.
