The story

William DeVol razed a cottage restaurant called the Nash House and began building the hotel in October 1910; it opened as the Terrace Inn on June 1, 1911, advertising electric lights and hot and cold baths on each floor at $2.25 to $3.50 a day. DeVol ran it until his death in 1938, and his widow and son-in-law continued until 1942. The original 40-room layout, kitchen, dining room and lobby survive largely as built inside the Methodist summer community of Bay View.

The ghost story

The inn itself reports a well-placed rumor that it is haunted by two workers killed when a beam fell during construction, and guests and employees say they have seen, heard and felt spirits. The Petoskey Area Visitors Bureau also notes its haunted history.
