The story
Samuel Swift built the house in 1814, and the Swift and Stewart families lived there until 1981. Governor John W. Stewart bought it in 1875, and in 1885 the Stewarts hired Clinton Smith, Middlebury’s most prolific Victorian architect, to design the horse barn and carriage house. On Stewart’s death in 1915 the house passed to his daughter Jessica. It became the Swift House Inn in 1984, and the Carriage House was converted in 1990.
