The story
Don Bastion built the road house in 1905 to serve the stagecoach trade and moved it in 1907 because it stood too close to the railroad. It closed during the Depression. John Stroppel bought it in 1939, drilled an artesian well and began offering mineral baths in 1940, cutting the building from 33 rooms to 20. The family ran the hotel into the 1970s, when a second well reached 119-degree water. It was listed on the National Register in 2025; the registration form calls such hydrotherapy properties rare in South Dakota, with only two others listed. The hotel lists five en suite rooms, and six share toilets, sinks and a mineral-water shower. Winter hours vary, so call ahead.
