The story

The village grew up after an 1851 federal land patent to Dr. George Story, and at its 1880–1929 peak it had two general stores, a grain mill, a sawmill, a school and a post office. Alra and Mary Wheeler built the present two-story general store in 1916 after the earlier one burned in November 1915, and the Hedrick family ran it from 1924 to 1969. Benjamin and Cynthia Schultz bought the store and nearby buildings in 1978, turned the ground floor into a restaurant and the upper floor into guest rooms, and assembled the village into Story Inn. The village was listed on the National Register as the Story Historic District in 2019.

The ghost story

The inn says its Blue Lady Room, above the old general store, is named for the 'Blue Lady,' a ghost several guests report seeing; it holds a Blue Lady Bash each Halloween.
