The story
Two jewelry firms, the Gorham Manufacturing Company and Benjamin Allen and Company, commissioned the Silversmith Building in 1896 on Wabash Avenue’s Jewelers Row. Architect Peter J. Weber of D. H. Burnham and Company designed it in a transition between Romanesque Revival and the Chicago Commercial style, with a central light court suited to silversmithing. It housed jewelers until late in the 20th century and is now a boutique hotel with 12-foot ceilings in its guest rooms. It joined Historic Hotels of America in 2016.
