The story
Charles Beaver built the original two-and-a-half-story Victorian house and opened it as a hostelry in 1896, naming it after a Victorian novel. In 1911 owner William C. Hoare had horses pull it across the highway and joined it to a 1903-04 house on the present lot, creating the Shelburne Hotel. Listed on the National Register in 1978, it is now run by Adrift Hospitality with a pub and restaurant.
