The story
Developers John W. Rust and Ralph King built the Colonial Arcade in 1898 as the second of Cleveland’s four downtown arcades, with the Colonial Hotel above. George H. Smith, co-architect of the 1890 Arcade, designed it. The Colonial Hotel opened on October 21, 1898. Twenty years after the hotel closed, investors partnered with Marriott, and the former Colonial Hotel reopened in 2000 as a Residence Inn above the restored arcade shops.
