The story

The State of Maine built the Romanesque Revival armory on Milk Street in 1895 for the Maine National Guard, to designs by Frederick A. Tompson. The Guard left in 1941; the U.S. Navy took it over as a recreation center in 1942, and after the war it served as a civic auditorium, public bathhouse and, from 1962, a State Paper Company warehouse. Hoteliers bought it in 1984 and opened the Portland Regency in 1987, keeping the exterior intact except for the upper-floor skylights. A 2012 renovation replaced the fourth-floor skylights with outdoor decks.
