The story

In the 1880s Las Vegas was the largest town in New Mexico Territory, and land baron Benigno Romero and partners built the Plaza Hotel on its plaza with 37 guest rooms, a saloon, a dance hall and a restaurant. In 1913 silent-film director Romaine Fielding rented the whole hotel for two years, and it has since appeared in films and TV from Tom Mix westerns to Easy Rider, No Country for Old Men and Longmire. A $1 million renovation followed in 1982, and in 2006 Charles Ilfeld’s neighboring 1882 department store was joined to it, adding 35 rooms and a ballroom.
