The story
Bricklayer James Callaghan built the last of the early hotels in Hot Springs State Park beginning in November 1917, and the Callaghan Apartments opened in June 1918 with 70 rooms and shared baths. Dr. P.W. Metz bought into the company in 1921 and renamed it the Plaza Apartments and Hotel. It is the only hotel left from the era when several hotels and the Carter sanitarium drew visitors to the Big Spring’s mineral water. It was listed on the National Register in 1993 and now operates as a Best Western Plus.
