The story

Washington investors announced the hotel in May 1926, and it opened near Union Station in 1927 as the 140-room Hotel Commodore, designed by Frank G. Pierson. Danny Coleman, who had opened The Dubliner pub on its ground floor in 1974, bought the hotel in 1980 and reopened it in 1982 as the Phoenix Park, named for Dublin’s park. Coleman added a tower in 1995; guests have included Bill Clinton, Ted Kennedy and Speaker Tip O’Neill, who held his 80th birthday party here.
