The story
Thomas B. Croke, a merchant and experimental plant breeder who later served as a state senator, commissioned the red-orange Manitou sandstone house. He sold it in 1893 to Thomas M. Patterson, a territorial delegate to Congress in 1874, U.S. congressman in 1877-79 and senator from 1901 to 1907, who published the Rocky Mountain News until 1913. Patterson’s daughter Margaret and her husband Richard C. Campbell lived with the senator until 1916.
