The story
Concord-born coal broker Joseph Stickney built the Y-shaped hotel in 1900-1902, bringing in about 250 Italian artisans for its granite and stucco masonry; it opened on July 28, 1902, and Stickney died within a year. In July 1944 the hotel hosted the Bretton Woods Conference, which created the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank. It was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1986 and opened for its first winter season in 1999. Omni took over management in 2009 and bought the resort, together with the Bretton Arms, in December 2015.
The ghost story
Staff and guests report sightings of 'the Princess', founder's widow Caroline (Carolyn) Stickney, most often in Room 314, where she is said to appear at the edge of her original four-poster bed. Historic Hotels of America features the story among its haunted hotels.
