The story
The Queen Anne house of local brownstone was completed in 1890 as a summer home for Allen C. Fuller, Illinois’ adjutant general during the Civil War, who came to Bayfield to escape hay fever. Mary and Jerry Phillips bought it in 1973 and opened what the inn calls Wisconsin’s first bed and breakfast. They enlarged it in 1985 to 12 guest rooms and suites and in 1987 bought the nearby 1908 Frank Boutin Jr. mansion as a sister inn, Le Chateau.
