The story
The building was constructed about 1865 by the Champlain family, per the inn. After the turnpike arrived the family sold the house, and it became the Barbizon Oak Inn, a boarding house. A major fire in 1965 destroyed its staircase and interior walls and closed the Barbizon Oak; later owners restored the building as the Old Lyme Inn. Renovated again in 2012, it has 13 guest rooms, a dining room and The Side Door jazz club, and its rooms look out on the Lyme Art Association and the Florence Griswold Museum.
