The story
Antonio Joseph, later New Mexico Territory’s delegate to Congress, began developing the springs in 1860 as a sanitarium, and his family ran the resort until 1929. Between 1881 and 1910 the Josephs added a store with guest rooms and a 14-room frame hotel. After that hotel burned about 1912, Elizabeth Joseph built the present adobe Mission Revival hotel in 1917, and the resort peaked in popularity between 1917 and 1929.
