The story

The Billings Investment Company built the first Northern Hotel on this site in 1902, and it became the city’s social center. When it burned in 1940, company president Preston Moss commissioned Chicago’s Holabird and Root to design a larger fireproof hotel. The new ten-story Northern opened in 1942 despite wartime material shortages. A later renovation cut the rooms from 212 to 160.
