The story
The two-story wood-frame hotel and cafe went up on pilings at 207-211 Stedman Street in 1924, overlooking Thomas Basin. The National Register nomination for the Stedman-Thomas Historic District names George Shimizu and his family, among the Asian immigrant business owners on Stedman Street, as the owners and operators of the New York Hotel and Cafe. The neighborhood’s Japanese community had a small school and meeting house above the street. The building was rehabilitated with original materials and reopened as a hotel in 1991. It keeps its original wood storefront, doors and windows, which the nomination calls among the best detailed in Ketchikan.
