The story
German-born Captain Albert E. Hatt, who arrived in 1859 and ran a riverboat, built the brick Hatt Building on the Napa River in 1884 and later operated it as a mill. The Keig family ran the Napa Mill until the mid-1970s, and the building was listed on the National Register in 1977. Developer Harry Price spent years converting the mill into a hotel while preserving its industrial character; rooms now occupy the original warehouse.
The ghost story
According to hotel staff and past guests, as reported by Historic Hotels of America, Captain Albert Hatt's son Albert Jr. and his wife Margaret still roam the halls of the old mill. The friendly sightings range from a woman in a white dress and doors that move on their own to the sound of footsteps and the swish of a heavy dress.
