The story
James Sperry and John Perry opened the Sperry & Perry Hotel in the summer of 1856. Its stone walls and iron shutters protected it when fire destroyed most of downtown Murphys in 1859, and it reopened in 1860. Renamed the Mitchler Hotel and then, in 1945, the Murphys Hotel, it was bought in 1963 by 35 investors from the ‘Murphys Ale and Quail Club’, who secured its National Register listing.
