The story
Albert E. Du Beau, a Canadian entrepreneur, opened Du Beau’s Motel Inn in August 1929 as a ‘motor hotel’ for ‘the better class of motorist,’ with carpeting, double beds and tiled bathrooms. Phoenix Avenue carried Route 66 through Flagstaff until 1934; after the realignment Du Beau put up an 80-foot neon sign tower. For years it was a youth hostel; John and Lisa McCulloch bought it about 25 years ago and turned it into a boutique motel.
