The story
Workers with the Civilian Conservation Corps developed the park in the 1930s, building an amphitheater, a lodge and rustic stone cabins on the mountain east of Huntsville. The park opened on August 25, 1938. The mountain had earlier drawn health seekers to the Hotel Monte Sano, a 233-room resort that opened in 1877. All 14 cabins were renovated with funds from the 2022 parks bond, and officials held a ribbon-cutting on February 20, 2026. The stone cabins keep working fireplaces.
