The story
Financed by George Wingfield, George S. Nixon, Cal Brougher and Bob Govan, the five-story Mizpah opened in November 1908 and, with the Belvada across the street, was the tallest building in Nevada until 1927; it had Tonopah’s first elevator. Legends that Wyatt Earp kept the bar and Jack Dempsey was a bouncer are unproven. Frank Scott of Las Vegas restored it after buying it in 1979. Closed from 1999, it was bought by Fred and Nancy Cline of Cline Cellars in 2011 and reopened that August.
The ghost story
Guests report the Lady in Red, said to be the ghost of a woman murdered on the fifth floor by a jealous lover or husband. Ghost Adventures featured her, and USA Today readers ranked the Mizpah the best haunted hotel in the US in 2018.
