The story
The two-story brick Queen Anne house was built in 1884 during Berkeley Springs’ post-Civil War building boom, which the town’s native illustrator David Hunter Strother described in his 1876 Centennial address. The nomination also calls it the Hovermale-Mendenhall House and counts a small wooden outbuilding as contributing; the inn takes its name from the Mendenhall family, whom it describes as the first owners. Innkeepers Greg and Claire Schene now run it as a five-room bed and breakfast a block from the warm springs.
