The story
The Hotel Statler opened in 1917 to designs by George B. Post & Sons and is described as the first air-conditioned hotel in the United States. It became the Statler Hilton in 1958 and the St. Louis Gateway Hotel in 1966. An arson fire in 1987 closed it during renovation, and it stood empty until a $265 million restoration (2000-2002) with a new eastern addition reopened it as the Renaissance Grand. After a 2014-15 renovation it reopened as the Marriott St. Louis Grand.
