The story
Charles Mouton (1797-1848), son of Vermilionville (Lafayette) founder Jean Mouton, built the house in 1820 on part of his father’s 300-acre estate, where the inn says cotton and sugarcane were grown. Its brick ground floor, cypress upper stories and two-story front galleries blend French Creole and Greek Revival design. The Moutons lived here until the 1860s, and Lafayette mayor Kenneth F. Bowen owned it from 1979 to 1995.
