The story
Mabel Dodge, a salon hostess and arts patron from New York, settled in Taos and married Tony Lujan of Taos Pueblo. The property, then a four-room adobe, was bought in 1918 for $1,500 and expanded by Taos Pueblo builders into the house the couple called Los Gallos. Georgia O’Keeffe, Willa Cather and Ansel Adams were among the visitors who found inspiration there, and D.H. Lawrence wrote about the house; Carl Jung’s visits to Taos Pueblo also trace to the couple’s circle. The house now runs as a historic inn and conference center with workshops.
