The story
The site held the Goldwater-Castaneda Mercantile, where the 1883 holdup known as the Bisbee Massacre left four people dead. The Letson Block is rated a significant building in the 1980 district inventory for its oriel windows, bracketed cornice and cast-iron storefront. Owners restored it in 2005 and opened the Letson Loft Hotel in 2006. A Valentine’s Day 2024 fire destroyed two neighboring buildings and damaged the hotel, which reopened on March 11, 2025 after a full restoration.
