The story
Four Latchis brothers built the hotel and theatre as a memorial to their father, Demetrius Latchis, a Greek immigrant who had built a chain of New England theaters. It opened in 1938 in a ‘Greco Deco’ design meant to echo their father’s homeland, welcoming train travelers from New York, Boston and Philadelphia. Interior murals on Greek mythology are by Hungarian muralist Lajos Jambor. Wikipedia calls it one of only two extant Art Deco buildings in Vermont; the building is run by a local arts nonprofit.
