Built
1882Abraham Staab built his three-story brick Second Empire mansion in 1882 (resort history page; HHA "dates back to 1882"; city survey "1882"). In the 1930s R.H. and Eulalia Nason built Pueblo Revival adobe casitas around the mansion and opened La Posada (HHA: they bought it in 1936); more lodging was added in the 1980s and in a late-1990s renovation. The Staab House now holds a bar. Which room types are in the 1930s casitas is not stated; HHA's ghost lore names a Room 101 in the Staab House.

The story

German émigré Abraham Staab, whose wholesale firm with his brother Zadoc became the territory’s largest, built the brick mansion on Palace Avenue in 1882 for his wife Julia. Julia Staab died in 1896 and Abraham in 1913. Lawrence and Edna Elliot owned the house from 1920; in 1936 Harold and Eulalia Nason bought it with six acres and older adobe structures and built casitas around it, calling the business La Posada. The resort grew in the 1980s, was renovated after Olympus Corp. bought it in 1997, and joined Historic Hotels of America in 2019.

The ghost story

Guests and staff report seeing the apparition of Julia Staab, wife of the mansion's builder, in the Staab House, particularly in Room 101 near the fireplace, and describe a melancholy but benign presence. The resort itself says her alleged spirit has featured on ghost tours and on Unsolved Mysteries.
