The story
Major R. O. Edwards built the Confederate House on this corner in 1861; Sherman’s forces destroyed it in 1863, and the Edwards House followed in 1867. The present 12-story hotel replaced it in 1923 and was the center of Jackson society and politics for more than forty years. Okeh Records recorded blues sessions in a room here in December 1930. Dumas Milner bought it in 1954, renovated it and renamed it the King Edward, and it closed in 1967 and stood empty for about 40 years. A 2007-2009 restoration turned it into apartments and a Hilton Garden Inn, which opened December 17, 2009.
