The story

William Le Baron Jenney’s firm, Jenney & Mundie, designed the New York Life Building, built in stages: a 12-story building on LaSalle Street in 1893-94, a 13-story east addition in 1898 and a further story in 1903. The city calls it an important surviving example of early Chicago School high-rise construction and one of the oldest buildings on LaSalle Street, with one of downtown’s most distinctive marble lobbies. KHP Capital Partners bought it in 2014 for conversion, and it opened as the Kimpton Gray Hotel in 2016, named for the Georgia gray marble and granite inside.
