The story
Captain Daniel Walker deeded land to his children, and through the early 19th century their families built the houses that now make up the collection. Captain Nathaniel Lord built his three-story Federal mansion with a cupola in 1812, when the War of 1812 had halted shipping and shipbuilding in town. The William Jefferds Jr. House on Pearl Street dates from 1805 and was remodelled in the Colonial Revival style in 1882. In 2021 Lark Hotels joined the Lord, Jefferds, Fairfield and Patterson houses into one 45-room village resort.
The ghost story
Ghost-walk accounts report that Phoebe Lord, who lived in the mansion for decades after her husband died, still lingers in its rooms. Sightings of Captain James Fairfield and his brother-in-law Nathaniel Lord have been reported at the Fairfield house since a 1991 renovation.
