The story
The United Verde Copper Company built its fourth and last Jerome hospital in 1926 on stable ground high on the hill; the poured-concrete building opened in January 1927 with an Otis elevator, X-ray and surgical suites. In 1930 it was called the most modern hospital in Arizona. Phelps Dodge ran it until it closed in 1950, and it then stood empty for 44 years. Larry Altherr bought it in 1994 and opened the Jerome Grand Hotel in 1996.
The ghost story
The hotel's own history page says some strange occurrences have been documented over the years in the former hospital, that TV shows have explored its 'spirit' nature, and that visiting psychics picked up on its past.
