The story

Mining engineer George D. Smith bought the site of Mark Hopkins’ Nob Hill mansion, destroyed in 1906, and built a 19-story hotel with Weeks & Day that opened on December 4, 1926. Actor John Barrymore lived there soon after it opened. Smith called its glass-walled rooftop lounge the ‘Top of the Mark’. He sold the hotel in 1961, and it passed through several operators before becoming an InterContinental.
