The story
German immigrant Frederick G. Wolf, who had worked for the Union Pacific and run a liquor business, built the hotel in 1893 for about $6,000. It became a stagecoach lunch stop and the social hub of Saratoga, and hosted investors in the Encampment copper district. Doug and Kathleen Campbell bought the run-down hotel in 1977 and restored it; it was listed on the National Register in 1974. C.J. Box set part of his novel ‘The Disappeared’ in its Room 9.
