The story
The Vendome was built in 1917 to meet Prescott’s demand for housing, with 31 rooms and 16 shared bathrooms; the Prescott Journal-Miner called it ‘the classiest place in town’. The lot had earlier held the Victorian house of county supervisor William Hutchinson, demolished between 1901 and 1910. The building was overhauled in 1983, the year it was listed on the National Register. Today it has 20 rooms with private baths, some with vintage claw-foot tubs.
The ghost story
Local tale holds that the hotel is haunted by Abby Byr, a tuberculosis patient said to have died in her room in 1921 with her cat, Noble, after her husband left on an errand and never returned.
