The story
Robert and Evelyn Foehl commissioned Edward L. Varney to design the Valley Ho, which opened December 20, 1956 as Scottsdale’s first motor resort, with air conditioning and a curving porte-cochere. Its success brought two more wings in 1958, and spring-training players such as Joe DiMaggio stayed there. Ramada bought it in 1973 and covered the 1950s design; it closed in 2001 and faced demolition. Westroc Hotels & Resorts restored it and reopened it on December 20, 2005, adding a seven-story tower in Varney’s spirit in 2006.
