The story
W. D. Wheeler replaced the Wenger family’s Cliff House boarding house above Nye Beach with the 39-room New Cliff House, which operated as the Gilmore Hotel from 1920 to 1984. Friends Goody Cable and Sally Ford bought it in 1984, restored it and opened it as the literary-themed Sylvia Beach Hotel on March 14, 1987, the 100th birthday of the Paris bookseller. They sold it in 2024 to a Portland-based hospitality group, which reopened it as Hotel Sylvia in 2025 with 22 author-themed rooms.
