The story
Doctor Diaz’s residence once stood on the site, and the De Vargas Hotel opened there in 1889, probably as a wooden building. A fire destroyed it in 1922; the rebuilt hotel reopened in 1924 with a Mission Revival exterior and hosted many local politicians. It was bought, remodeled and renamed Hotel St. Francis in 1986, and Heritage Hotels & Resorts acquired it in 2009. The hotel calls itself Santa Fe’s oldest hotel, a claim La Fonda also makes.
