The story
August Ramthun opened the building in 1873 as a saloon and rooming house near Madison’s east-side railroad depots, two years after a new depot opened nearby. A later owner encased the wooden structure in brick and added a rear wing around a courtyard, and as the Elver House it kept that name until 1939; between 1873 and today it changed names five times under 14 proprietors. The restoration as Hotel Ruby Marie turned the original 36 small rooms into 15 guest rooms, keeping the original doors along the hallways.
