The story
The Norfolk and Western Railway opened the first Hotel Roanoke in 1882, the year it put its headquarters in Roanoke. The sprawling half-timbered building seen today was built in stages, its dominant section designed in 1938 by hotel specialist Knut W. Lind of George B. Post & Sons. The hotel closed in 1989 and was donated to Virginia Tech, which restored it and added a large conference center; it reopened in 1995.
