The story

The hotel says the land was granted around 1725 to Louis Boucher de Granpré, a lieutenant of New Orleans founder Bienville, and that the site of its 500 building held a military hospital built in 1722. The French Market Ice Company occupied the tract from 1903 until a fire destroyed it; Vernon and Eunice Dupepe then bought the land and opened the hotel in 1961 with 44 rooms. The family later restored neighboring buildings, including an 1825 townhouse and an 1830s Creole store-and-residence, and acquired an 1874 building in 1969.

The ghost story

The hotel's own blog repeats a story that a security guard stepped off the elevator onto the second floor into a scene of a Civil War field hospital; the hotel says the property served as a hospital during the war. This is reported lore.
