The story
Jerome B. Wheeler, an Aspen mining investor who also built the town’s Wheeler Opera House and a bank, built the hotel in 1889 at the height of the silver boom. It opened with 76 rooms, a bar, restaurant, billiard room, ladies’ waiting room and shops. In the 1940s the Aspen Institute leased it for program participants, cut the rooms to 39 and opened the pool. John T. Gilmore reopened the then-closed hotel in 1968 with 34 rooms, and it now runs under Auberge with a Michelin Key and the Bad Harriet speakeasy downstairs.
